DIY Gift Inspiration — Home-made Granola

With holiday gifting season upon us, every blogger’s advice seems to be the same — do it yourself!  Although DIY gifts are definitely a money saver for those of us on a budget, it is still important to make sure we are creating gifts people actually want or need…hence the idea of a foodie gift.  However, many of us are trying to be healthy this season, even amidst the temptation to over-indulge.  Instead of loading your friends and family up with cookies, candy and popcorn, try a home-made treat that’s both delicious AND healthy — granola!

Granola is a great gift, because who doesn’t love it?  You don’t need to be a health-food guru or a foodie to appreciate this sweet treat.  Even people (like myself) who don’t love eating a bowl of cereal in the morning can use granola as a yogurt or ice cream mix-in, a baking ingredient, or add it to trail mix for an afternoon snack!  Have I convinced you yet?  If so, here’s how you can make your own custom holiday granola mix, and package it nicely for the gift-giving season:

Recipe for Easy Granola from Real Simple

Ingredients

  • 4  cups  old-fashioned rolled oats (not quick cooking)
  • 1  cup  sliced almonds
  • 1/2  cup  shredded coconut (preferably unsweetened)
  • 1/4  cup  unsalted pepitas (hulled pumpkin seeds) or shelled sunflower seeds
  • 1/2  cup  pure maple syrup
  • 2  tablespoons  canola oil
  • 1/2  teaspoon  kosher salt
  • 1  cup  dried fruit (such as cherries, cranberries, raisins, or currants)

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 350° F. On a rimmed baking sheet, toss the oats, almonds, coconut, and pepitas with the maple syrup, oil, and salt.
  2. Bake, tossing once, until golden and crisp, 25 to 30 minutes. Add the dried fruit and toss to combine. Let cool.
  3. Keep at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 1 month.
To gift, package in a cute, reusable canister or oversized jar!  The canister shown above is from The Container Store, but you can also find similar options and Crate & Barrel, HomeGoods, or even Target.  Add a pretty bow and personalized label or gift tag for a festive touch!
Happy Gifting!
